Space Pants!


My mom has long been a fan of the tights and long shirt look, providing maximum comfort while still looking presentable and stylish. She does not have a pair of Lululemon tights though! My sister and I (as well as millions of 20-something girls on university campuses) all agree that this is a serious crime, but my mom has always insisted she couldn't bring herself to spend that much money on yoga pants. So we had decided to get her a pair for Christmas...

...Until we actually went to buy them. I SWEAR the price keeps going up and up, they're over a hundred dollars now! We quickly found a plan b, and that was workout wear patterns. We ended up getting her the Papercut Patterns Oh La Leggings and Pneuma Tank, and since they are conveniently PDF patterns, I get to use it too! I have seen many versions of these pants floating around the blogosphere and it has always been highly praised, namely Melissa from Fehr Trade has made SIX pairs!

Around this time I had also made my first online fabric purchase, I had been looking for space print spandex for EVER, and I had filled countless online shopping baskets only to balk at the shipping fees. BUT I stumbled across the Fabric Fairy and they have a wide array of fun spandex prints and best of all, reasonable shipping to Canada!!!

And so, born from these two events, is my pair of SPACE PANTS!



One of my favourite things about these tights is the high waist. My biggest issue with a lot of off-the-rack gym tights is the lack of butt space. There is nothing worse than feeling your pants slide down and show your butt crack with each squat rep.

They're also stylish enough to wear out and about!

I had one minor fit problem with the tights that was easily remedied, there was a bit of a flap at the front where the curved seam is. I just kinda pinched it and pinned it where it wouldn't be flappy anymore and sewed that seam.

I definitely am going to sew these pants again, they are really fabulous. Next time I'd like to do a casual wear pair. Lauren from Lladybird posted a phenomenal pair a couple days ago with a faux leather panel, absolutely to die for!

      Yeah the seaming on these is super cool! I just finished a colour blocked pair, there are so ways to jazz up this pattern!

      I love finding out other bloggers are canadian! Seeing familiar stores and commiserating about shipping fees for online fabric shopping is definitely a big plus

I saw the pattern for the Watson Bra from Cloth Habit the week it came out and instantly knew it had to happen. I had slowly been replacing all my underwire bras with sports bras for comfort reasons, and was thrilled with the idea that I could sew my own! Cocoon Coat

I absolutely fell in love with this pattern while I was living in London, its a 1920's inspired cocoon coat from  Ralph Pink . I absolutely love 1920s and 30s fashion, and was looking for a project that would challenge me and I could learn from, this seemed to fit the bill. I decided to make the cropped version of the coat, as I'd only seen one other make from this pattern pop up google, and that was a long one from The Wallinna . I got a good start on it while I was over there, I bought some wool suiting and beautiful printed lining in Walthamstow market, this was the most amount of money I'd spent on a garment as the fabrics are quite good quality. Unfortunately life happened and I started packing up to come home and didn't get around to finishing it off until very recently...when I found out this pattern fits very very small. Spring-time Blair Shirt

I took an accidental hiatus from documenting my makes, so long I forgot the password to the account! I haven't stopped sewing though, and have been mostly making work appropriate shirts (read: soooo many Archers ) I ordered a bunch of linen from Miss Matatabi and got the last meter of a beautiful blue Nani Iro linen, which came in on the same day Style Arc announced an Easter sale, so I snatched up a pdf copy of the Blair shirt . I first saw Sophie from Ada Spagg's version of the shirt and loved the outfit she put it with, so decided I'd give it a whirl. One meter wasn't quiiittee enough to squeak out a full shirt, so I found a really similarly coloured linen to colour block the back upper piece. Worked out all right! I had to do away with the sleeve cuffs with such limited material, they're finished with white bias tape. I really love the colours of this fabric, so spring appropriate!
